When I have kids, I'll encourage them to try new things and explore different cultures. But if any of them head down Gothic Avenue, that's it... they're going to boarding school.
That's funny that you say that. I've been thinking a lot about how to raise Caleb and I know that he has to make his own mistakes....but where do you draw the line?? What if ALL his friends are from Gothic Avenue/Heavy Metal Blvd AND Hippie Landing????!!!!
Well, my opinion is that parents need to give their kids some room to try different things. I'd actually be less against Hippie-ism, because they promote peace (through drugs and sex, I guess). But going down the Goth route doesn't go over well with me. Especially since Goth gets bad press. I don't want my kid to get weird piercings or tattoos, actually. And I certainly don't want them to take me out in a family murder-suicide.
But kids don't go it alone. I don't generally think a teenager heads towards Goth on their own. They do it because they meet friends who are into it. If that were the case, a change of friends is what I'd recommend. Hence going to boarding school.

Where's Gothic Avenue? Sounds dangerously close to Heavy Metal Boulevard and Hippie Landing. I'd want my kids out of those general neighbourhoods.
